Marriage Improvement – Soap Operas

Are you addicted to soap operas, and are you experiencing marital problems?

Cartoon Dancing for joyIf so, I have great news for you!

Here is the marriage challenge for this week:  Quality Personal Time

  • Boycott soap operas
  • Replace them with a positive, healthy, happy, quality time with family

Sorry. My purpose is not to be mean or judgmental toward anyone. But, like pornography,
soap operas can become an unhealthy, mind altering addiction.   People waste hours each week on soap operas that could be spent enriching their minds with healthy, positive perspectives on life.

When you think about soap operas, what kind of relationship skills do the actors model? Good ones? Bad ones? To be fair, one can say they model both and give people a chance to see what damage bad behavior creates. But the problem is that there is so much bad behavior modeled in such a way that people begin imagining themselves behaving the same way.

How many times have you watched a show and imagined yourself doing what the actors were doing? If you’re like many of us, you have probably done this many times. And living a soap opera life vicariously can cause us to practice the behavior that leads to trouble until we become really, really good at it. We see actors seeking revenge. In fact, with most soap operas, one revenge leads to another, and arguments escalate when people begin to insult, bully, manipulate, deceive, and devalue each other as the characters portrayed on TV.

When children watch soap operas, that often shapes their way of thinking, too.  Especially when they begin to see soap opera mentality lived out in real life.

So, if you needed a babysitter for your children, which would you prefer: a babysitter who porked out in front of the TV ignoring your kids and watching soap operas while telling your kids not to bother her, or a babysitter who would read to your children, play with them, and teach them good character, love, and healthy relationship skills?

Breaking a soap opera addiction can be uncomfortable initially, but once you feel emancipated from the slavery, you will be thankful you decided to cut them out of your life so that you could enjoy real life!
